Distal End Cutter Orthodontics

Distal end cutter is one of the most important instruments in orthodontics. It is frequently used in Orthodontics during different procedures in ongoing treatment.

Distal end cutter cuts wires close to the buccal tube and safely holds the distal end so that the buccal mucosa is saved and it doesn’t get hurt. The Tungsten Carbide inserts ensure precision cutting, long wear, and unsurpassed cutting performance.

This instrument is mainly used to cut the extra piece of wire present around the teeth. The piece can cause damages due to its sharp edges and may cause the mucosa to bleed.

Types of distal end cutters

Different types of distal end cutters are used to cut orthodontic archwires under different conditions.

The archwires comprise nickel-titanium and stainless-steel wires of different dimensions, as well as twist flex and coaxial wires.

Universal cut and hold distal end cutter

It is designed to cut all types of wires ranging from .012" (.30 mm) to .021" x .025" (.53 mm x .64 mm). When this instrument is intraorally, it safely holds the cut portion to be discarded without damaging the mucosa. Patient comfort is enhanced by the smooth, tapered tip that doesn’t hurt. This instrument is approximately 4.5" long.

Flush cut no hold distal end cutter

It is an exceptional universal cutter for all types of wires up to a maximum of .021" x .025" (.53 mm x .64 mm) used in almost all orthodontic setups. This cutter is a flush cut, no hold, distal end cutter. Shear cuts wire flush to the buccal tube. Its edges should be sharpened periodically.

It cut and holds wire distally, flushes to the buccal tube or bracket while reducing de-bonding; designed for all types of wire up to a maximum of .020" (.51 mm). Usually, when purchased from the dealer it comes with 1 silicone insert already loaded in the working end with 2 extras included in the package. Replacement silicone inserts can be re-ordered.

Slim flush cut and hold distal end cutter (long handle)

A true flush cut and hold the instrument, this cutter has a 50% reduced working end as compared to 678-111, thus enhancing visibility and improving efficiency by eliminating the need for a cotton roll or piece of gauze to catch the cut portion. As a result, a smoother procedure is performed. When purchased from the supplier, this cutter comes with 1 silicone insert already loaded in the working end with 2 extras included in the package.

Flush cut and hold distal end cutter (O-ring design)

Hu-Friedy's cutting inserts cut distal wire flush to the buccal tube or bracket while the blue ring grasps the cut wire until released thus preventing the wire to be dropped in the mouth. The enhanced design reduces de-bonding and improves patient comfort. It is designed for all types of wire up to a maximum of .021" x .025" (.53 mm x .64 mm).

Lingual distal end cutter

Specifically designed for lingual treatment it cuts hard wires up to .018" (.45 mm). It provides optimal intraoral access and maximum visibility for the clinician to perform the procedure. The comfort of the patient is enhanced as well.
